  1. SOUTHEAST: CLIMATE AND WEATHER

  3. In this region of Alaska, summers are mild, with fre-
  4. quent rains and long periods of overcast. Winters are
  5. also mild, with temperatures above or near freezing.
  6. Although it varies from community to community, preci-
  7. pitation is generally heavy -- ranging from 30 inches a
  8. year to an estimated 400 inches per year. Ketchikan is
  9. probably the dampest!  October is consistently the wet-
  10. test month, while clear days occur most frequently from
  11. February through June. Fog occurs the entire year, but
  12. is most likely in late ummer and early winter.  Snow
  13. often falls wet and heavy. Winds are generally light in
  14. protected valleys, but they are almost constant, and
  15. frequently strong, along the coast. Skagway probably
  16. is the windiest city in Southeast. The Panhandle (as
  17. this region is often called) has short, dark nights in
  18. June and longer winter days than experienced farther
  19. north.  Juneau's average (mean) temperatures are low
  20. of 20 and high of 28 degrees F in January and low of
  21. 47 and high of 62 degrees F in July.
